One thing everyone should know by now, is that McToys contradict themselves. I have seen it happen more than once. Not saying it is just McToys, it happens with many companies. Simple advice, don't trust any of them.
I was just looking at the new ND figs and they look really awesome. I haven't even seen the movie and I already want the figures.
With that said, I have to point something out. How many fucking times over the years has McF said they didn't want to make a certain figure (usually in Movie Maniacs) cuz it would just be "some guy standing there"? Well, what the fuck are the Napoleon Dynamite figures????? For the most part, it's just SOME GUY STANDING THERE!!!!
I don't really know if this is a criticism or not, cuz I do like the figures. I guess it just makes me feel like the "guy standing there" reasoning is or was perhaps total BS all along. Clearly, McF can make superbly crafted and visually interesting figures of GUYS JUST STANDING THERE. So the next time someone asks for a rather "visually non-active" figure, no more excuses, McF!!!

yeah... they've done so many figs that would have been so much better if they character had just been standing there instead of in some "dynamic" pose...
"How can I dance with another? Hoooooooo! When I saw her standing there!"
For the most part, static figures do NOT sell well since they are visually "uninteresting", i.e. do not stand out on the shelf much. We'll see how this line actually moves... but remember a couple of things:
1) McFarlane for the most part does NOT sell toys to people, but to toy buyers (stores). THEY are the ones McF has to convince that the toys are good and dynamic. If the TRU buyer doesn't like them, the line is not going to be worthwhile to sell, no matter how many "real" people want them, since even club sales are a drop in the bucket (albeit a much better profit margin each).
2) The company grows. What they say one year may change when other ideas come up, people finally convince Todd to change his freakin' mind, etc.
That said, I see no real sales on ND, they will be the Little Nicky of 2005. I hope the sales department didn't order too many (like they did with LN... if they didn't make as many to start with, LN might even had broken even).
Truth is, even though I liked the movie, I couldn't care less about the figures. I think they are great likenesses and sculpts but I can't help but think why? These aren't toys. They're collectible figures with a very narrow market. Pop culture is fickle. These will be a hot item 20 years from now for an even narrower market.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ha! That was the exact comparison I thought of too when I heard they were making ND figures. Granted, I don't like the movie so I am somewhat biased, but even allowing for the "cult hit" phenomenon I just can't see there being a large enough consumer base to really sell those things. While I agree with you, this is not the first time they have made non-dynamic posed figures. Just look at Scott Evil or even Michael Myers. Hopefully this will be somewhat of a trend for McF (or at least they won't be so hesitant to do it in the future). A few other companies out there are coming out with static posed figs. not sure how they are selling though...
The ND figs look great though. Love the little pedistals.
